Children and Young People’s National Diabetes Network, Social Care and Type 1 Diabetes working group

Supporting children, young people and families where there are safeguarding concerns can be complex and emotionally demanding work. Diabetes teams are often involved in situations where health needs, family circumstances and multi-agency decision-making intersect, and where outcomes may not always improve as expected.

Healthcare professionals have a clear duty to follow up safeguarding concerns and to escalate them when appropriate. Serious case reviews repeatedly highlight the risks that arise when concerns are not pursued, questions are not asked, or professional challenge is delayed. Being clear about expected outcomes for the child is essential in recognising when further action is needed.

The documents within this section of the website has been produced by the Children and Young People’s National Diabetes Network, Social Care and Type 1 Diabetes working group, to support diabetes professionals working with children, young people and families where there are safeguarding concerns.
