Wales

The Brecon Group Register has been used in an international study on DKA rates at diagnosis. This has now been published in Diabetalogia – see article here: “Temporal trends in diabetic ketoacidosis at diagnosis of paediatric type 1 diabetes between 2006 and 2016: results from 13 countries in three continents”.

It is down to the quality of the data in the Brecon Register that allowed this collaboration, keeping Wales on the international map. All units have played their part in ensuring the Brecon Register has the highest quality up-to-date data.

The same countries would now like to internationally compare the DKA rates and severity at diagnosis of Type 1 diabetes, and particularly during the COVID epidemic. Previously the Brecon Group Register only noted if there was DKA at diagnosis.  However, it would be helpful to have data on the severity of DKA for the last 3 years.

In Spring 2020, all units in Wales were contacted regarding patients who had been registered from 1 January 2017, to ask for pH and Bicarb at diagnosis, and HbA1c at diagnosis or within 7 days of diagnosis, if performed. Units are also being asked to provide this information for newly diagnosed patients going forward. All units are asked to please enter this information on the Brecon Registration form. (It’s suggested to add this information in the bottom border of the registration forms, or if address labels are used across the name and NHS number fields, to use the empty address box on the form.)
