Type 2
In her role as Type2 lead for the South East region, Carolyn Hill is keen to establish a working group of clinicians with an interest in the management of CYP with Type 2 diabetes. This group will be practical in its focus, and will provide members with an opportunity to share best practice, discuss complex or challenging cases, and learn from one another. Ideally there would be at least one representative from each unit to ensure that practice is shared across the network and we work towards a standardised approach. Please email c.hill@nhs.net if you would like to be involved.
Webinar: GIRFT’s Improving the Perioperative Pathways of People with Diabetes Programme
Professor Gerry Rayman (GIRFT joint clinical lead for diabetes), Emma Page (GIRFT workstream delivery manager) and Jeremy Speed, Diabetes Programme Manager South East, invite you to join them for a lunchtime webinar to discuss how your trust can benefit from the adoption of the this programme >Read more. The South East webinar will take place on the 19th January at 12.30 – 13.30 hrs.

Staff Information and Opportunities
Network vice chair role
We have yet to fill the role of Vice Chair for the Thames Valley Network. This role does not have allocated time, and as such is a voluntary position, however it will not require a significant amount of your time over and above what you already do as a member of our network.
That said, if you were keen to involve yourself more in network projects then we certainly would not say no! Taking up a network role will give you the opportunity, should you wish, to liaise and work alongside colleagues from across the integrated care systems that we work with and champion the needs of CYP with diabetes across Thames Valley. In order to develop an MDT leadership approach we are looking for this role to be filled by a Doctor or PDSN. If you are interested please contact Myfi.
Lead paediatrician role
In order to be compliant with the NPDA self-assessment framework as a network we also need to have a named Lead Paediatrician for the network. This role could be combined with the vice chair role, and will not require any input over and above attendance at network meetings.
New PREM survey launching in the new year
Keep your eyes peeled for further updates on the launch of our ‘New Patient PREM’ launching in the New year, which will measure the experiences of those in their first year of diagnosis.
National T2 Working Group survey
A survey link had been sent to all clinical leads to participate in a national survey that aims to understand the barriers to completion of care processes in CYP with type 2 diabetes. The request is for one response per PDU to be submitted, deadline 20th January 2023. You can access the survey via the following link: https://www.smartsurvey.co.uk/s/T2Outcomes/ but please liaise as a team to ensure that only one responses is submitted per unit. If you encounter any issues when completing this survey or have any questions about it, please contact heather.clark26@nhs.net
Peer support
NHSE have published a document that outlines the key principles of good peer support for people living with Type 1 diabetes: NHS England » The six principles of good peer support for people living with Type 1 diabetes. Peer support has been shown to improve people’s abilities to live with and manage long term conditions day to day, and can be hugely supportive for those that find it difficult to engage with heath services. In addition to this, DUK are set to launch a youth peer support programme in 2023, and two of our Thames Valley parent reps are part of a national programme to design peer support for parents of CYP with Type1 diabetes.
We are really keen in Thames Valley to support units in the development of your peer support offer, and would like to set up a working group bringing together members of the MDT with parent reps and young people, to look at how we can turn the principles developed by NHSE and the national peer support programme into a reality for Thames Valley families. If you would like to be a member of this group please contact Myfi.

- Survey for parent carers on exercise and Type 1:
JDRF are conducting research into the motivations and challenges that people with type 1 diabetes have around movement, physical activity and exercise. We really want to hear about the experiences that people with the condition have of anything which is deemed physical, such as walking the dog, doing household chores and also structured exercise in areas such as sport. We hope that the insight gleaned from the survey will help shape our future plans, policies and projects in the area of physical activity and type 1 diabetes.
The survey will take around 12 minutes to complete, the responses will be fully anonymised and no personally identifiable data will be collected. Click on the below links to access the survey.

Survey on diabetes education
The national Aim 1 working group, which aims to ensure that every child has access to the same level of diabetes care & education, has released a survey for families, children & young people to better understand their experience of education: https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/KW6B95S and would be grateful if you could share the link with patients via your communication channels.
Thank you for taking the time to read through this bulletin. Please do let me know if you have news items that you would like to share across the Network for future editions. Seasons greetings as we approach the end of 2022- my first year working in the Thames Valley network! Thank you all for being so welcoming, I hope that you are able to enjoy some time off over the holiday period and I look forward to seeing you all again in the New Year.
Best wishes
