October 2021 Bulletin

20/10/2021

Welcome to October’s E-bulletin for the Thames Valley Children and Young People with Diabetes Network. As most of you will be aware, this is my last month in post so please be sure to get in contact if you require any help or information. We are holding interviews for my replacement next Wednesday 13th October and I will notify you before I leave of my replacement’s details. In other news, Dr Fiona Regan our Network Chair has accepted a 6-month sabbatical post at the Evelina. She will continue to Chair our network until her term ends in June 2022.

Many thanks,

Jennifer.

3.      Staff Education

a.       Diabetes UK

I know that a few teams have recently recruited new staff. The Diabetes UK website have an excellent summary of all available postgraduate courses.

4.      Staff Information and Opportunities

a.       NDA Type 2 Audit Report

https://digital.nhs.uk/data-and-information/publications/statistical/national-diabetes-audit/young-people-with-type-2-diabetes-2019–20

This report published August 2021 looks at the number of people with Type 2 DM up to 40yrs and links to NPDA data.

b.      Medtrum Closed Loop System

I’ve been speaking with our Medtrum rep in relation to the National Tech group. Some teams and families might be aware of the closed loop system from Medtrum. Here’s an update. The closed loop system will be launched for Nano users in 2022. Until then the TouchCare Nano A8 will just offer the Semi-Closed Loop system, with predictive and low glucose suspend functionality. The closed loop part of Nano whilst it hasn’t been launched yet, it is being used as part of the NHS England Hybrid Closed Loop Pilot. If you have families looking at pumps and may be suitable/interested in a closed loop system in the future then they may wish to consider using the Nano pump.

c.       Monogenic Diabetes

Julie Cropper has been given the contact details of all clinical leads and will be sharing information from NHSE about the new monogenic diabetes changes. Please contact Julie directly if you have not received this update. (julie.cropper@nhs.net)

d.      Diabetes UK Flash Statement

Attached is the press release from Diabetes UK on the recommendations for Flash Glucose Monitoring.

e.       Digibete

There is a Browsealoud function on the Digibete website which enables users to translate the written resources into 99 different languages. The films themselves won’t translate, just the text and all of the written resources that are available on the site.

Attached is a help guide which takes you through how to use the Browsealoud function. The Essentials films are now also available on the website with British Sign Language and can be accessed here: https://www.digibete.org/essentials-bsl/

b.      Fusion – Type 1 Diabetes Tech and Devices for Children and Young People

4th December 2021

Free virtual event

This event is for parents of children and young people living with type 1 diabetes who use, or are interested in, technology and devices to help manage type 1 diabetes and want to learn more about the latest and advanced tech. By the end of the event you will:

  • understand what devices and technology are available to help manage type 1 diabetes
  • have found out how to access diabetes technology through the NHS
  • have met like minded individuals and heard how they manage their type 1 diabetes
  • have met the medical technology companies and had an opportunity to ask questions
  • know what new tech is on the horizon
  • know how JDRF can help with technology access problems

c.       Diathlete

This is a great resource for anyone interested in learning more about sports and type 1 diabetes. The team regularly hold events so it’s worth checking the site intermittently or following on facebook/twitter for updates.

d.      RCPCH & Us

The RCPCH works with children and young people to create information that is relevant and meaningful. If you’d like to learn more or have a child or young person that would be interested in joining the group, visit https://www.rcpch.ac.uk/work-we-do/rcpch-and-us

Best wishes,
