Consensus Statement from the National Network on FreeStyle Libre®

Thu 5th Oct 2017

Following the announcement on 13th September 2017 by The NHS Business Services Authority confirming its approval of the listing of the FreeStyle Libre® flash glucose monitoring system in the Drug Tariff, the Children and Young People’s National Diabetes Network would like to reiterate the importance of managing patient expectations at this time. Whilst the Libre will be available on the drugs tariff from 1st November 2017 it is vital that we explain to our families that this is the first step in a long journey and they cannot expect to receive sensors on prescription immediately after 1st November 2017, it is important that families are aware of the detail and not just the headlines!

We would encourage all PDUs with the support of their network to engage with the purchasers of health services in their localities to agree clinically sensible access policies and we would advise that all team members are regularly updated on developments to ensure a consistent message is communicated to children, young people and families.
